WAS 500 Sprinter with a new box body from WAS
The WAS box body panel

The WAS box body panel
For durable and cost-effective box bodies in the ambulance service

The box body is the heart of every ambulance and is constantly exposed to heavy loads during day-to-day operations. WAS has fundamentally refined the panel construction of the box body: a reinforced outer layer increases resistance to localised damage, whilst an optimised profile geometry enhances the structural stability of the entire body. The result is a box body that can withstand the tough demands of daily emergency service operations over the long term.

The decisive advantage of the WAS box body panel becomes apparent when servicing is required: if the panel is damaged in an accident or otherwise, in many cases the affected wall segments no longer need to be laboriously replaced in their entirety. Instead, the optimised design enables targeted repairs through partial replacement and smart repair – individual wall sections can be precisely swapped out. This significantly reduces downtime and sustainably lowers maintenance costs over the entire vehicle lifecycle.

Robust construction. Quick repairs. Low follow-up costs.

  • Reinforced outer layer protects against localised damage during operational use
  • Advanced profile geometry increases the stability and efficiency of the entire box body Modular panel construction: individual panel segments can often be replaced selectively – no complete replacement required
  • Repairs via partial replacement and Smart Repair significantly reduce workshop costs
  • Shorter vehicle downtime – greater availability for operational use
  • Sustainably reduced maintenance costs over the entire vehicle lifecycle

Three innovations. One goal:
Maximum availability in operation.

The advanced box body construction combines three coordinated innovations that make the box body of emergency vehicles more robust, safer and more economical. The result: vehicles that remain available for longer, incur lower costs and actively support crew safety.

  • A reinforced panel construction with optimised repairability ensures that damage can be repaired quickly and cost-effectively.
  • An electric locking system with an integrated status display enhances operational reliability in day-to-day use.
  • And an automatic step cover minimises the risk of injury when boarding by automatically securing the step.

Panel construction
More robust. More durable. More economical.

The box body of an ambulance is subjected to constant stress in day-to-day operations – from impacts, weather and routine use. WAS’s advanced panel construction meets these demands with a reinforced outer layer that significantly better absorbs localised damage, and an optimised profile geometry that enhances the structural stability of the entire body. Should damage nevertheless occur, affected panel segments can in many cases be replaced selectively via partial replacement or Smart Repair – without the need for a complete replacement. This minimises downtime and reduces maintenance costs in the long term.

  • Reinforced outer layer to protect against localised damage
  • Optimised profile geometry for greater structural stability
  • Modular repair capability: individual panel segments can be replaced in many cases
  • Repairs via partial replacement and Smart Repair

Automatic step cover
Automatically greater safety when boarding.

The side entry to the ambulance is one of the most frequently used areas during operations – and is also a potential tripping hazard. The automatic step cover closes automatically when the sliding door is operated, creating a continuous, safe, step-free entry surface. This effectively and permanently minimises the risk of injury when getting in and out.

  • Automatic cover when the sliding door closes
  • Continuous, safe, step-free entry surface
  • Effective reduction in the risk of injury
  • Reliable operation in every operational situation

Electric locking system
Securely locked. Reliably monitored.

All box body doors on an ambulance must be reliably closed and locked during operation. WAS’s electrically controlled locking system locks all body doors automatically and securely. An integrated status indicator immediately and unambiguously signals any doors that are not fully closed. The new system replaces the previous mechanical solution and impresses in continuous operation with significantly lower maintenance requirements whilst maintaining high system reliability.

  • Electric locking of all box body doors
  • Integrated status display for doors that are not closed
  • Significantly lower maintenance requirements
  • High system reliability in continuous operation
