From idea to trade fair attraction –
Trainee project ‘Ape’ picks up speed

A creative idea turned into an extensive practical project: over the past few months, our trainees have completely restored a mint green Apeand prepared it for use as an advertising object in the SV Meppen stadium and as an eye-catcher at trade fairs.

The journey from vision to finished vehicle began with a clear concept for the body and interior fittings, including project structure, parts lists and process planning, just like a regular customer order. The aim was not only to convert an old Ape into a mini ambulance, but also to learn which departments at WAS are responsible for which tasks and how a vehicle is completely converted step by step.

From restoration project to ready-to-use Ape

The basis: a mint green APE Classic D from Piaggio. The Ape was purchased in poor condition and completely overhauled by two of our trainees, Erik and Dominik, at the Berger company in Nordhorn. The work included, among other things:

  • New floor in the driver's cab
  • New tyres and rear lights
  • Custom-made new wiring harness and overhaul of the electrical system
  • Newly upholstered seat
  • Engine test and technical optimisations

The chassis was sandblasted, painted white and given a new MOT. After that, the first test drive from Nordhorn to Emsbüren was given the green light: it was a success! At the same time, planning for the box body was underway. The box walls came from EMS Panels, and the body itself was built by our box manufacturing department. Then it was off to Ochtrup to Fair Service for the decals.

Shortly before completion, the blue lights, design warning system and final details were added. However, the interior fittings and the electrics in the box had to wait, as a sponsorship deal with SV Meppen came up at short notice. The Ape was able to serve as an eye-catcher at the first home game at the beginning of August.

During the winter break, the Ape will return to our workshop. Then the interior fittings, the electrics and the blue lights will be added, and as a special extra: our WAS waffle iron. This will mainly be used at (trainee) trade fairs to address visitors directly on site and strike up conversations. In addition to the culinary offerings, an integrated screen will also be installed, where interested parties can find out about WAS, our products and, above all, our training and career opportunities. At future events, the Ape will not only impress with its appearance, but also with its culinary delights and informative content, making a strong contribution to our career section.
